Heart vs. Head

Written by Megan Hamilton, published April 5, 2021

Inside all of us is a little voice, a Jiminy Cricket if you will, it’s supposed to help us make good choices and steer away from the poor choices. A guiding voice through life that cements our decisions in our minds. An internal monologue prior to decision making.

 Seems great right?

But what happens when anxiety takes over the little voice?

Suddenly our internal monologue goes from helpful to hurtful. In a split second our guiding voice turned against us. We stop believing in our choices, we suddenly question our every move. Our mind is telling us we cannot do this or that. We become frozen in fear; stuck in one spot as if we have become enveloped in quicksand.

So how do we stop it?

By talking back of course! I am sounding crazy right now but trust me, I have got a point here. Inside your head is this little voice saying you cannot accomplish something, but what triggered you to consider your next move?

Your heart. Ah yes, that big, beautiful organ that silently tries to guide you. You have a weapon against the anxiety coated little voices in your head! Your heart is pushing you into a direction and you can feel it is right so use that! When your head suggests you cannot do something let that heart of yours guide you. Talk back to that little voice. Tell it to shove it, or other naughty words Sara would not appreciate me putting in a blog. Your heart should be your guiding light, and the loudest voice in your head on its strongest day is nothing compared to the sheer will power of your heart.

For so long I too let that voice in my head riddled with anxiety rule my life, I made my choices based on fear. Fear of failing. Fear of rejection. Fear of success.

Suddenly I realized I was going no where I wanted to go. I was stuck on a one-way ride. So, I gave my heart the driver seat. I left a loveless marriage, I got a promotion, and I applied for a life changing scholarship and won. Suddenly I became the person I always dreamt of being. I followed my heart and told the voice in my head to hop in the trunk.

I traveled! I put myself on a plane, alone, and traveled across the country to meet people I never met but had read my words and believed in me. I was a guest on a podcast and told my story and had thousands of people listen to it. I admitted my dreams and chased them! This summer I will speak at Dare to Be Great 2021, I will speak on something passionate and close to my heart. I am on a road I never thought I could be on, and it is because I ditched that scared little voice in my head and started following my heart’s guidance.

It is time for you to do the same. Step outside your comfort zone, take some classes, meet new people, and broaden your horizons. There is so much out there for you to see in this industry, there is so much for you to do. The world is out there waiting for you!
