That can be an exciting yet frightening statement to hear! The thrill, the pride, and maybe a teensy bit of terror? Without any formal leadership training, this can be both exhilarating and daunting.
In the 9-1-1 sector, many rise to leadership positions without the benefit of the formal training programs available in other industries. We excel at managing calls, handling emergencies, and maintaining team composure under pressure. However, leadership also requires skills in motivation, delegation, and fostering a positive team environment.
The skills you developed on the call floor are highly transferable to leadership roles. It's important to acknowledge that not having all the answers is perfectly acceptable. Embracing this vulnerability can actually become a significant strength.
Here are some strategies and resources for leading without formal training:
Leverage Your Team
Remember, you were not promoted into isolation. Your team possesses a wealth of experience and knowledge. Delegate tasks, seek feedback, and empower team members to take ownership. This approach not only lightens your load but also fosters a sense of responsibility and collaboration within your team.
Seek Mentors
The 9-1-1 community has many outstanding leaders. Identify those who inspire you and leverage their insights. WIN (NENA's Women in 9-1-1) is an excellent resource for mentorship. You can join their mentorship program to connect with experienced leaders who can provide guidance and share their experiences.
Commit to Continuous Learning
Explore the numerous online resources, leadership books, and conferences focused on public safety leadership. Engaging with these materials can enhance your skills and keep you updated on best practices. Some valuable resources include:
International Public Safety Association (IPSA): Offers training, webinars, and conferences on various public safety topics.
APCO International: Provides training courses, certification programs, and leadership development resources tailored to public safety professionals.
National Emergency Number Association (NENA): Offers a variety of professional development opportunities, including workshops, webinars, and an annual conference.
911der Women Workshops: Quarterly series of live virtual trainings given by industry experts designed to instill lasting learning for the current and next generation of leaders in the 911 industry.
Lead by Example
Model the qualities you value in a leader. Show respect, empathy, and a dedication to excellence. Your behavior sets the standard for your team and can inspire them to adopt similar attitudes and practices.
Ask Questions
No one expects you to have all the answers. Asking questions demonstrates a commitment to learning and growth, which are essential leadership qualities. Encourage a culture where questions are welcomed, and learning is continuous. This can foster a more open and collaborative environment.
Foster a Supportive Environment
Creating a supportive environment is crucial for team cohesion and morale. Encourage open communication, recognize achievements, and provide constructive feedback. Implementing regular team-building activities and check-ins can also strengthen relationships and trust within your team.
Focus on Well-being
The nature of 9-1-1 work can be stressful. Prioritize the well-being of your team by promoting work-life balance and providing access to mental health resources. Organizations like The Code Green Campaign offer support and resources for mental health in public safety professions.
Engage with Professional Networks
Join professional networks and organizations to connect with other leaders in the field. Networking can provide you with new perspectives, support, and opportunities for collaboration. Consider joining Public Safety Communications Leadership Program: A leadership development program tailored to public safety communications professionals.
We are in this together! Leading without formal training can be challenging, but it also presents a unique opportunity to learn, grow, and make a significant impact on our teams and communities.
